The Idea Behind The Image: Ten photographers explain the creative thought processes behind their latest projects, from conception to edit.

The British Journal of Photography’s projects section features thematic series of photographs, be they a narrative-led photo story in a documentary vein, a set of commissioned still life images that employ some kind of visual signature, or a personal investigation of a subject chosen by the photographer.

What they have in common is that they have been shot recently, they have a coherent thread (they’re not just a random set of single images), and they point to trends in contemporary photographic practice or are innovative in their own right.

For this free special app we have selected 10 of the best projects we’ve featured over the past 18 months, ranging from Louis Porter’s wryly observed series of photographs, Crap Paint Jobs (which is part of a wider project entitled The Small Conflict Archive, exploring the terrain vague of the city, in this case Melbourne), to Hua Weicheng’s End of Ashes, a poetic travelogue of images shot all across China.

Brought to you from the makers of British Journal of Photography, the award-winning magazine that takes you to the cutting edge of contemporary image making.
